Sex Week release their new EP, Upper Mezzanine, today. Of the unpredictable, sometimes gloomy, sometimes playful EP, the band says “’Upper Mezzanine’ was chosen as our second EP title because it represents a level that doesn’t really exist. Somewhere in between. You’re grateful to not be in the nosebleeds, but you’re also not in the orchestra seating. We’re still discovering our identity with every song we make, and so this batch of songs helped shape us and hopefully potential future songs.”

To mark the release the band has shared a video for EP highlight “Moneyman,” directed by Poppy Shaw. “‘Moneyman’ is about having to pay the “money man” money, all while keeping love alive. Everyone in America has a moneyman, a stranger waiting to be paid, whether it be an actual person or a credit card company.” The video was shot in Vegas earlier this year.

The band celebrates the EP release in their native NYC tomorrow night at TV Eye, before heading over to the UK later this month. Dates and tickets on the artist page.

Today Brooklyn’s Sex Week release another teaser single from their forthcoming Upper Mezzanine EP, due on August 1st. “Lone Wolf” is maybe the best distillation of what the duo of Pearl Amanda Dickson and Richard Orofino do best: a witchy brew of sinister slowcore and truly tuneful melody. “We wanted the song to sound how a dungeon feels,” muses the band. Upper Mezzanine is the second EP from Sex Week, coming August 1st.

Where the music of Pearl Amanda Dickson & Richard Orofino’s self-titled debut felt like momentarily glimpses of something scary and exciting – here things feel far more visceral, each track a focused punch delivered directly from the gut. Today they share “Coach,” a melange of mutant bluegrass rave music, animatronic Americana, and putrified pop.

“I still want people to be singing along and taking the melodies away with them, but the darkness of this EP is obviously there,” says Dickson. “The world is scary right now. I’m scared in lots of ways, and I think that omnipresent feeling definitely snuck into Upper Mezzanine.”

Today Sex Week, the Brooklyn duo comprised of Pearl Amanda Dickson and Richard Orofino, release “Coat,” a visceral and sinister new single that expands on the world they built with their acclaimed self-titled debut EP from last year.

“Coat” is a defiant dirge that flirts with a peak only to submerge itself back into an oblivion of grumbling synths every time. Like the band that birthed it, the song is never satisfied. It loops back on itself patiently, while its lightly psychedelic music video, directed by the band themselves, follows a similar trick, splitting the screen with a mirror causing the same images to melt into themselves. The song is from a batch of new material the band has been working on all year.

It took exactly one listen to Sex Week’s first single “Toad Mode” to convince us to track down Richard Orofino & Pearl Amanda Dickson and sign them ASAP. Once the ink dried, we discovered they were sitting on a trove of equally incredible material that we’re pleased to release to the world today in the form of their debut EP, fittingly-titled: Sex Week. From the evil pop vibes of “Angel Blessings” to the lethargic beauty of “Kid Muscle,” there’s something sinister and beautiful going on here. But there’s an innocent playfulness to a lot of the proceedings too, exemplified in that fateful first single and in the just-released “Naked,” whose Bachelor-lampooning video arrived earlier this week.

All of this is just to say: we love this band. And we feel very lucky to be delivering this music to you today.

Last month Brooklyn duo Sex Week announced their self-titled debut EP. Today they return with another taster from the release: “Kid Muscle.” It’s a slowcore slowburn, replete with the band’s quickly-materializing calling card of hushed whispers and submerged shrieks clinging to the underbelly of a patient pop song. The track is paired with a video set in a rainy black box, with Sex Week’s live band performing an off-kilter, soaking wet version of the song while Pearl writhes, prances, and bewitches the band and the viewer.

Today we welcome the duo of Pearl Amanda Dickson and Richard Orofino – aka Sex Week – to the Grand Jury family.

We stumbled over their first single “Toad Mode” in November of last year and it immediately charmed us. Languid slowcore with a touch of levity – think Bedhead or Pinback minus the tendencies toward self-seriousness. Little did we know what more lurked beneath…

Today, paired with our signing announcement, is a new single called “Angel Blessings.” Where “Toad Mode” was playful and patient, the latest Sex Week offering is dark and insistent. From the jump it pokes and prods, and its INLAND EMPIRE-inspired video does the same. Stark blacks and reds match the song’s mood, and in its back half you’re treated to a hallmark of the new music Dickson & Orofino are working on, the bewitching doubled vocal of Pearl, one performing a distant black metal scream, the other whispering softly in your ear. It’s very, very good.
